BIOCORD, «A new bio-active device for Spinal Cord Injury regeneration» is a three year project funded by the 2018 Spanish State R&D Program. The project started in January 2019 and is coordinated by our partner Dr Victoria Moreno Manzano at Principe Felipe Research Center (CIPF).

Prof Jorge Más Estellés and Prof Manuel Monleón Pradas co-lead the subproyect at CBIT. BIOCORD proposes the generation of a complex biomaterial designed to successfully rescue neuronal activity after spinal cord injury (SCI). We have previously developed a new scaffold concept that consists in a semi-tubular structure of cross-linked hydrogel with aligned polymer microfibers in the internal wall covered with neural progenitor cells. With BIOCORD we are improving the design of the scaffold while maintaining the biomechanical and anatomical needs of the soft spinal cord tissue, and taking into account the high risks and difficult access with physical impediments to the affected area for local treatments and translational applications.
