BIOCON, “Engineered bioactive, electro-conductive and antimicrobial microenvironments able to stimulate bone regeneration and prevent multidrugresistant infections” is a three year project funded by the 2018 Spanish State R&D Program. The project started in January 2019 and is coordinated by Prof Roser Sabater i Serra and Dr José Molina Mateo at CBIT. Our partner in the project is Dr Ángel Serrano Aroca at Fundación Universidad Catolica de Valencia San Vicente Martir.
Age-related fractures and non-healing bone defects together with postoperative infections after reconstructive surgery are still a major health challenge. We work in a novel strategy to design biomimetic cell microenvironments for bone regeneration. Our approach aims to engineer a material-based platform that is able to promote cell differentiation towards skeletal lineages and, simultaneously, inhibit microbial growth. We combine smart electroactive materials and inorganic biomolecules that can stimulate osteogenic differentiation and maintain antimicrobial properties.
